Why people come to us for this
Because these are not NHS tests, your own GP is often unable to arrange them, and you are left to organise them yourself with a date already booked. Bloods, ECG, lung function and swabs are all done here at 1 Skipton Road in Ilkley, usually in a single visit, by an HCPC-registered clinician. You do not need a referral and you do not need to be registered with us. If you cannot get to the clinic, most of it can be done at home across Yorkshire.
What we can arrange
Blood tests. Full blood count, kidney, liver and bone function, HbA1c and thyroid, plus infection screens such as hepatitis B and C and HIV where your hospital asks for them. Our Essential Health Screen covers most of what is routinely asked for before surgery.
MRSA and MSSA screening swabs. Taken here in a 15-minute appointment, with the result emailed to you usually within 2 days. If your admission date is close, we can run the swabs by PCR instead and get the result back the same day.
12-lead ECG. With a GP review letter if your surgeon wants the trace interpreted rather than just sent.
Spirometry. Lung function testing where your anaesthetist has asked for it.
Clinical observations. Blood pressure, oxygen levels, pulse, height and weight, recorded alongside your results.
What we do, and what we don’t
We carry out the tests your surgeon has asked for and send you the results. We do not decide whether you are fit for your operation. That decision belongs to the surgeon and anaesthetist carrying it out, and they will want to review the results themselves. If something in your results needs looking at before you are admitted, we can arrange a GP appointment to talk it through.
What it costs
Because every operation and every hospital asks for something different, we quote against your list rather than selling a fixed package. These are the individual prices, so you can see roughly where you will land:
Essential Health Screen (full blood count, kidney, liver, bone, cholesterol, HbA1c) — £99
MRSA / MSSA screening swab — £75, or from £125 for a same-day result

Every price includes your appointment, the blood draw where relevant, your clinical observations and your report. Most blood results come back within 2 to 3 working days.
Clotting screens
These can be arranged, but they work differently from the other tests. A clotting sample has to reach the laboratory within four hours of being taken, so it needs an early morning appointment and dedicated same-day transport. That means we price these individually and book them by phone rather than online. Tell us if your surgeon has asked for one and we’ll let you know the cost and which days we can do it.
Send us your list
Email the tests your surgeon has asked for to info@ypchealth.co.uk, along with the date of your operation, and we will come back to you with a price for the lot and a time to come in. If you would rather talk it through first, call us on 0113 531 4947.
Timing matters more than people expect. Bloods and swabs taken too early can expire before your admission date and have to be repeated, so tell us your date and we will work backwards from it.
Questions
Do I need a referral?
No. Book directly, and you do not need to be registered with us.
Will you tell me I am fit for surgery?
No. We provide the tests and the results; your surgeon and anaesthetist make that decision.
What if my hospital asks for something not listed here?
Send us the list anyway. We can arrange most routine pre-operative tests through our UKAS-accredited laboratory, and we will tell you straight away if there is something we cannot do.
Can you come to me?
Yes, for most of it. Home visits are available across Yorkshire.
I am having surgery abroad. Can you help?
Yes. Clinics abroad usually send a list of tests to be done before you travel, and this is one of the more common reasons people use us.
Can you do a group and save?
No, and nor can anyone outside the hospital treating you. A blood group taken elsewhere is not accepted for crossmatching — the hospital transfusing you will always repeat it in their own laboratory.
