Why people book a private blood test

Most people who book with us are doing one of three things: looking for an explanation, setting a baseline, or getting bloods that somebody else has asked for.

Symptoms you cannot explain. Fatigue, weight change, low mood, poor sleep, aching joints, or infections that keep coming back. Blood work rarely gives the whole answer by itself, but it rules a lot in and out quickly — anaemia, thyroid problems, low B12 or vitamin D, raised blood sugar, inflammation, and liver or kidney strain.

A baseline while you feel well. Cholesterol, HbA1c, kidney and liver function and thyroid all drift long before you notice anything. One set of numbers is useful. Two sets a year or two apart are far more useful, because you can see which way things are moving rather than a single snapshot.

Because someone has asked for them. Insurers, private consultants, fertility and ADHD clinics and pre-operative assessments often want specific bloods before they will go further, and an NHS practice will not always run them on request.

There is no referral and no registration. Using us does not affect your NHS GP registration, and your report is yours to take to them.

Have a health cash plan through work?

Many plans let you claim back the cost of health checks, tests or GP appointments. We give you an itemised receipt to send to your provider. Check your policy first, as cover varies. Blood tests are often listed under “health screening” or “diagnostics” in cash plan policies.

How it works

Booking. Book online at any time and you will see live availability as you pick your slot, or call 0113 531 4947 if you would rather speak to someone. We usually have good availability and can normally see you within a week.

The appointment. Around 15 minutes at 1 Skipton Road, Ilkley, LS29 9EH. We take your clinical observations first and then the sample itself, so your report shows more than the bloods alone.

Your results. Most come back within 2 to 3 working days and are emailed to you as a YPC Health report, with every result colour-coded against its reference range and your observations alongside it. Results are not automatically reviewed by a doctor. If you want a clinician to talk you through them, a GP review can be added for an extra charge.

Phlebotomist

Nervous about needles?

A fear of needles and a tendency to faint are both common, and we are familiar with both. Nobody else is present in the clinic room during your appointment except the clinician, unless you choose to bring a friend or support person. We can also offer numbing cream if required.

This is James, our main phlebotomist. James is a paramedic with HCPC registration and has extensive experience in phlebotomy.

We are familiar with patients with autism — tell us what helps when you book. We can perform phlebotomy on anyone aged 14 and older.

We will take clinical observations such as height, weight, pulse, BMI, blood pressure and waist and hip circumference with every profile above, so your report gives the fullest picture of your health.

What happens after your blood test

Results, GP review and next steps

 

  • Your sample goes to the laboratory the same day, and most results are back within 2 to 3 working days.

  • You receive a colour-coded YPC Health report by email, with anything outside the normal range clearly flagged against its reference range. If you would like a GP to review and explain your results, this can be added for an extra charge.

  • If any result is outside the normal range, you can add a GP review or book a GP appointment with us to go through your results and arrange further tests or treatment, or take your report to your own GP.

Blood test questions answered

 

Do I need to fast before my blood test?

For most of our profiles you do not need to fast. For the YPC Advanced Health Profile and the Sports Performance profile we recommend fasting for 8 to 12 hours beforehand (water is fine) and booking an appointment before 10am. If you are unsure, ask us when you book.

 

Do I need a GP referral for a private blood test?

No. You can book any of our blood tests directly, online or by phone, without a referral, and you do not need to be registered with us.

 

How quickly will I get my results?

Most results are back within 2 to 3 working days. They are emailed to you as a colour-coded YPC Health report, with each result shown against the laboratory's reference range.

 

Will a doctor review my results?

Not automatically. Your report is colour-coded so you can see at a glance whether each result is within the normal range, but it is not individually reviewed by a doctor unless you ask for this. A GP review can be added for an extra charge, or you can book a GP appointment with us (£90) or take your report to your own GP.

 

What happens if a result is abnormal?

Anything outside the normal range is clearly flagged on your report. How much does a private blood test cost in Ilkley?

Our blood tests start at £69 for the Cholesterol & Lipid Profile and go up to £295 for the YPC Advanced Health Profile. Every price includes your appointment, the blood draw, clinical observations and your colour-coded report. Single markers and bespoke profiles are quoted on request.

 

Who takes the blood and where is it analysed?

Your sample is taken by an HCPC-registered clinician, usually a paramedic, at our clinic at 1 Skipton Road, Ilkley, and analysed by a UKAS-accredited laboratory.

 

Can children have a private blood test?

We can take blood from anyone aged 14 and over. For younger children please contact us and we will advise.
