Every medical is carried out one-to-one by an HCPC-registered clinician at our CQC-registered clinic at 1 Skipton Road, Ilkley, with free parking outside the door. There is no waiting list, appointments are often available the same day, and you can book online and pay when you book.

Why do you need a medical?
Employers have a duty under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 to assess the risks in a job and make sure workers are fit to do it safely. Where sudden ill health could cause a serious accident, that means a medical before someone starts and at regular intervals afterwards.
The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 require everyone on site to be fit and competent for their work. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 and Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 expect workers to be physically capable of the task, and of escape or rescue. The Control of Vibration at Work and Control of Noise at Work Regulations 2005 require health surveillance wherever there is exposure to vibration or noise.
Major contractors and National Highways schemes ask for a current safety critical medical, normally repeated every three years, more often over 65 or where a health condition needs it, and again after a serious illness, injury or an absence of more than four weeks. This follows the Society of Occupational Medicine’s construction worker health assessment guidance, which replaced the Constructing Better Health standard.

Which medical do you need?
Book the medical your employer or site asks for. Both are bookable online for our Ilkley clinic, and both can be delivered on site for groups.
Fit to Work Medical – 20 to 30 minutes
Good for: pre-employment and pre-placement checks, forklift and plant operators where the site does not ask for a safety critical medical, drivers of works vehicles, warehouse and general fitness for work, and return to work after illness or injury.

Good for: working at height, confined spaces, plant, crane and forklift operators, construction site workers and managers, National Highways and high-speed road workers, lone workers, and any role a risk assessment identifies as safety critical.

Drug and alcohol testing
Good for: pre-employment, random, for-cause and post-incident testing without a full medical, in clinic or on your site, days, nights and weekends. Point-of-care urine or saliva screen and breath alcohol test, with laboratory confirmation and chain of custody where needed.

The Safety Critical Medical is the one used for working at height, confined space, plant, crane and forklift, construction and highways roles; there is no separate, more expensive medical for each of those. YPC Health cannot be held responsible for an incorrect medical being booked.

Safety critical medicals: your questions answered
Which medical do I need?
Ask your employer, site or health and safety representative which standard applies. Most construction, plant, working at height, confined space and highways roles need the Safety Critical Medical. Pre-employment checks, forklift or plant operators on sites that do not ask for a safety critical medical, and general fitness for work are usually covered by the Fit to Work Medical. If a client or contract sets its own standard, we can build a custom medical to match it.
How long is the certificate valid for?
Most employers ask for a repeat every 3 years, more often over 65 or where a health condition needs it, and again after a serious illness, injury or an absence of more than four weeks, in line with the Society of Occupational Medicine’s construction guidance. Some sites use shorter intervals from 55. Your employer decides what they accept, so check with them.
What should I bring?
Photo ID, any glasses or contact lenses you use, hearing aids if you wear them and a list of your current medications. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before a Safety Critical Medical, and try not to empty your bladder just before your appointment as a urine sample is needed.
Is the drug and alcohol test included?
Yes. A urine drug screen and a breath alcohol test are included in the £155 Safety Critical Medical. Most providers charge extra for these. If a screen is non-negative we can send the sample to an accredited laboratory for confirmation with full chain of custody (£100, plus £50 for each additional substance), so no decision is ever made on a screening result alone.
What happens if I am not fit?
A medical is an assessment, not an automatic sign-off. If something is found we explain what it means and what happens next: that may be a repeat test, a referral to your own GP or one of our in-house GPs, or a review by an occupational health nurse or physician where your employer requires it.
Who carries out the medical?
An HCPC-registered clinician at our CQC-registered clinic at 1 Skipton Road, Ilkley, LS29 9EH, with certificates signed off by an occupational health specialist. Appointments are one-to-one in a private room.
How quickly can I be seen?
There is no waiting list. Book online and same-day appointments are often available. Employers can book groups at the clinic or on their own site, including nights and weekends.
Do you do HGV, bus and taxi driver medicals?
Yes. DVLA D4 driver medicals are a separate appointment with our GP, £90: see our DVLA driver medicals page. Forklift and plant operators are covered by the Fit to Work or Safety Critical Medical, depending on what the site asks for.
