Can I Claim My Flu Jab Back From My Employer? The 2026 Rules Explained

If you've paid for a flu jab yourself, or you're thinking about booking one, you might be able to claim the cost back from your employer. From 6 April 2026, a change in the tax rules means employers can pay staff back for a seasonal flu jab without any tax or National Insurance to pay, for them or for you.

Here's what the change means for you, how to claim, and what you'll need.

Can I claim my flu jab back from my employer?

You can if your employer offers it. There's no legal requirement for employers to pay for flu jabs, so it depends on your workplace's own policy. But since April 2026 it has become much easier for employers to offer, because reimbursing a staff flu jab no longer counts as a taxable benefit.

Before April 2026, if you paid for your own flu jab and your employer paid you back, that money was usually treated as a taxable benefit in kind. That put many employers off. Now, HMRC treats a reimbursed flu jab the same as one your employer arranges directly: no Income Tax and no National Insurance.

Who can claim?

  • Employees. The exemption covers a flu jab for you as the employee.

  • Not family members. It doesn't cover flu jabs for your partner, children or anyone else in your household.

  • Not through salary sacrifice. If the flu jab is paid for through a salary sacrifice arrangement, the exemption doesn't apply.

How to claim your flu jab back

  1. Check with your employer or HR team first. Ask whether they'll reimburse a flu jab, how much they'll pay and whether there's a deadline for claims.

  2. Book your flu jab. You can usually choose any local clinic or pharmacy that suits you.

  3. Keep your receipt. It should show the date, the provider and that a seasonal flu vaccination was given.

  4. Claim through your normal expenses process. Submit the receipt in the same way as any other work expense.

Why this is good news for remote and hybrid workers

If you work from home, travel for work, or aren't in the office on the day of a workplace flu clinic, getting a flu jab through work has often been awkward. Flu vouchers usually only work at particular pharmacies, which may not be near you. Being able to book locally and claim the cost back makes it much simpler.
