Why do I need a medical?

It is important to be fit for work in whatever job you do. Safety Critical Medicals are in-depth medicals designed to ensure anyone who may be undertaking safety-critical tasks is fit and safe to perform their role.

These medicals are mandatory for many roles

The most common roles requiring these are:

  • Drivers

  • Forklift Truck Operators

  • Building site workers and managers

  • Working with plant machinery

  • Working in confined spaces

  • Hi-speed road workers

  • Crane Operators

  • Railway Workers

  • Working at Heights

  • Working in confined spaces

  • Others as identified by a risk assessment process

What happens during a medical?

The medical is customised based on role and occupation, the standard components of the medical are:

  • Clinical History Assessment

  • Musculoskeletal Assessment (mobility)

  • Vision screening (Visual acuity, Colour perception)

  • Weight, height and BMI

  • Hearing/Audiometry assessment

  • Respiratory Health (Spirometry)

  • Blood pressure, pulse & SPO2

  • Urinalysis

  • Dermatology

  • Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS/Whitefinger)

Depending on your role, additional components may be added to the medical such as:

  • Drugs & Alcohol Testing

  • ECG

The medical can take up to 1 hour and is performed at our clinic in Adel, Leeds, (LS16 8EX).

A PDF Certificate signed by an Occupational Health Specialist is sent by email within 3 working days of the appointment

*** There may be times when an individual may require referral to health healthcare specialists such as physiotherapy, G.P, cardiology etc. Availability and costs regarding these will be discussed prior to them being arranged
