Contraceptive Coil Services:

We understand that women's health care is a deeply personal and important aspect of your overall well-being. That's why we're dedicated to providing comprehensive women's health services, including contraceptive coil options and expert care.

What is a Contraceptive Coil?

A contraceptive coil, also known as an intrauterine device (IUD), is a highly effective birth control method. It is a small, T-shaped device made of either copper or plastic with a hormonal component. The contraceptive coil is inserted into your uterus by a healthcare professional.

Types of Contraceptive Coils:

Hormonal Coil (IUS): The Hormonal Coil releases a progestogen hormone called levonorgestrel, which thickens the cervical mucus and inhibits sperm mobility. It can last between 3 to 5 years, depending on the brand. It is also an excellent way to control heavy periods and as part of an HRT treatment regimen.

Copper Coil (IUD): This type of contraceptive coil is non-hormonal and works by releasing copper ions, which are toxic to sperm. It provides long-term contraception and can be effective for up to ten years.

The Coil Fitting Procedure:

Dr Becky Curtis will ensure your comfort and well-being throughout the process. The coil fitting procedure is a straightforward, with a combination of telephone and in clinic appointments. The following steps are involved:

Assessment: We will arrange an initial telephone consultation to discuss your medical history, contraception preferences, and assess your suitability for the contraceptive coil. Based on this information she will then prescribe the most appropriate coil for you and arrange an in clinic appointment for fitting.

Fitting: This is completed by carefully insert the coil into your uterus through the cervix, prior to this a local anaesthetic spray is used to help minimise pain during the procedure. You may experience mild discomfort or cramping during this process, but it usually lasts only a few minutes. Afterwards ensure that the coil is correctly positioned and you are comfortable, given aftercare advice and patient information leaflet before concluding the appointment.

Coil Removal Services:

If you already have a contraceptive coil and wish to have it removed, or if you're experiencing difficulties getting it removed through the NHS, we're here to assist. The removal process is typically simpler and faster than the fitting process. Our healthcare professionals will ensure that the removal is as comfortable as possible for you.
