Frequently Asked Questions
About Coronavirus (COVID-19)
COVID-19 is an infectious disease that can affect your airways and lungs, caused by the most recently discovered coronavirus.
This infectious disease was unknown until the recent outbreak which originated in China in late 2019. At the time of writing, cases of COVID-19 continue to rise daily across the globe.
The most common symptoms associated with COVID-19 are fever, tiredness and a dry cough, but symptoms can take up to 14 days to appear so it is difficult to know if someone has been infected ahead of these conditions appearing. In the meantime, infected people can spread the virus unknowingly.
Can the tests detect asymptomatic (no COVID-19 symptoms) patients?
Yes, the test will be able to detect COVID-19 in asymptomatic people, as they will have an immune response even though they don’t display symptoms. The timeline of infection will be the same as someone displaying symptoms.
Do any medications, drugs or other proteins in the blood affect the test result?
To date we have tested numerous common pharmaceuticals, none of which have interfered with the test. Also, Rheumatoid Factor does not interfere with the test, hence we currently see no cross-reactivity issues.
Can babies and young children be tested?
Yes, there are no issues with testing babies and young children.
Can pregnant or breast feeding women be tested?
Yes, there is no harm to the mother or baby when performing a test.
Is there anyone that shouldn’t be tested?
No, the more people that are tested, the better it will be to understand the spread of the virus, which will result in better measures being taken to prevent its spread. However, as the test requires a blood sample, anyone with a blood-related health condition (such as haemophilia) should discuss this with a healthcare professional before performing a test.
Is the test CE marked? Does it have IVD certification?
Yes, the COVID-19 test is CE marked for professional use and is therefore a registered IVD device.
Has the test been accredited?
The COVID-19 test is CE marked for professional use and is therefore suitable and ready for use by a healthcare professional, in addition to clinical evaluations already completed on the product.
Why should I have both the antigen and antibody tests?
Antigens can be detected at the onset of symptoms (day 0 to 10) and antibodies can be detected later (day 3 onwards). It is currently unknown just how long antibodies
remain in the body and what levels are required for immunity. However, combining antigen and antibody testing is extremely useful in maximising test sensitivity and covering the entire period of the infection in an individual. Therefore, the combination of rapid antigen and antibody tests provides an alternative to PCR for mass screening for COVID-19, especially in the workplace and in wider society. Effective antibody testing also allows for better understanding of the stage of infection and the longevity of COVID-19 antibodies.
